Community Herbalist and Founder of Althea Healing + Gardens

MEET CHRISTINA GIBSON

I believe that community health and land health are intimately connected, and so Althea Healing + Gardens is a dual offering with a wide lens on community care, on the medicine of place. I am motivated by seeing the spark come alive in others’ eyes when they remember and reclaim their evolutionary relationship with plants, which can be a gateway toward personal and collective liberation. The study and practice of working with herbs is a lifetimes-long endeavor, and both my studies and my lived experiences with healing herbs and gardens continue to expand and deepen with every season. The plants are our ultimate teachers and I’m grateful to them for beckoning me down the plant path.

background...

Christina grew up climbing dogwoods and Southern magnolias in Atlanta, GA, and has spent many moons rambling around the forests, fields, and creeks of the Southern Appalachian mountains. She has worked on land planning and design projects across scales, from residential permaculture design and fine gardening, to flower farming and urban forest restoration. Christina holds a B.A. from Sewanee and an M.A. in ecological design from the Conway School of Landscape Design. She is an adjunct professor of Environmental Studies at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and serves as Vice Chair of the City of Chattanooga’s Tree Commission.

Christina began her studies in herbal medicine in 2015 with Patricia Kyritsi Howell at the Botanologos School of Herbal Studies, where she became fascinated by the dynamic intersection of medical herbalism, energetic healing traditions, and the applications of bioregional plants of the southeast. She then apprenticed and worked with Lorna Mauney-Brodek of Herbalista, where she learned the roots and shoots of clinical practice, medicine-making, apothecary management, mobile street medicine, and community organizing. Ever since, Christina has been supporting folks with herbal remedies and building healing gardens everywhere she goes.

My mission is to connect people with the healing powers of plants and the places we inhabit.

I’m interested in guiding you into a therapeutic relationship with the living world around us for self-healing, community-healing, and earth-healing, all which are inextricably linked. I believe you have your own plant allies out there for this moment

in your life. Whether you connect with those plants in a daily cup of tea, in your medicine chest, or by tending a garden, my job is to help you identify your plant allies and tend to those relationships in order to meet your self-identified healing goals.

in the healing powers of plants.

that deep, intergenerational healing happens in community, not in isolation.

physical, mental, emotional, spiritual well-being are inextricably linked.

in health sovereignty and the right to make your own informed choices about your health care.
